Its
a village from el Bierzo situated on the Sierra dos Ancares ,
at the top of the beautiful River Burbia Valley, no doubt, one of
the purest rivers from el Bierzo.
The
name of the village comes from Aira (threshing floor) da Pedra (made of
stone), its a clear reference of a massive stone situated on the
middle of the village, on top of a little hill from where you can see running
the young Burbia river, just born from the bottom of the earth only a few
kilometres up the valley. This stone was used in the old times by all the
people in the village for threshing the wheat. This activity, unfortunately
lost on this days like many others country labours in el Bierzo, it was hard
work but also meant great moments full of partnership and happiness where
working was together with singing, storytelling and laughing. Another
interesting characteristic of this village is that it never lost its original
toponymy as it happened on most of west Bierzo during the tragic period of the
dictator, especially in the most important villages.
The
spirit and the energy that comes from the many villages of el Bierzo gives to Aira
da Pedra their inspiration, their music, a small contribution towards
the preservation of the wisdom, accumulated by generations by the people who
lived here, to try not to let it die in Ponferrada town where many families
emigrated from the countryside looking for, perhaps, a easier live and a
different future for their kids.
